The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards body, constituted by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986. Its main function is to create and propagate standards for products, processes, services, systems, and personnel to provide quality, safety, and reliability.
Major Functions of BIS:
Standardization – Formulation of Indian Standards (IS) for industries.
Product Certification – Running the BIS Certification Scheme, where products are ensured to conform to Indian Standards. The BIS certification mark is well established as an indicator of quality and safety.
Testing & Calibration – Offsetting testing and calibration services through a wide network of labs in the country.
Consumer Protection & Economic Growth – BIS assists in:
- Making available safe and reliable products.
- Reducing health hazards to consumers.
- Facilitating exports and curbing import dependence.
- Regulating proliferation of product varieties through standardization.
